New year resolutions

I’ve avoided new year resolutions for many years now - although not really because I did have some plans/wishes in my head but didn’t really shared them. That’s of course because I didn’t want to admit failure when asked “How is it going?”. But it didn’t work. I was frustrated not to achieve the things I’d hoped to anyway (e.g. not doing #cpd, not started to learn the viola). And although I’m not sure how declaring my hopes publicly might help I’ve decided to give it a go.

Coding

I’ve been talking about needing/wanting to learn how to code for a long time (on and off). Yesterday I signed up for with Codeyear.com … and even did the first few lessons on Codecademy.com. And you know what? It was huge fun!

Action: Just follow weekly instructions, complete tasks, comment on blog etc.

Job

Rather than feeling useless and unwanted because there aren’t any appropriate jobs going I’ll just continue to be professionally involved, i.e. do CIG stuff: monthly ebulletin, web editor events, FRBR workshop, visit to Thackray, CIG conference, Umbrella rep. That’ll do.

Action: Do things as and when they come.

Music

Of course I’ll continue with choir singing. But I’ll also take singing lessons again and - finally - work on my short-breathness. Viola has to wait.

Action: Arrange with Tom.

Running

I’ll do one 5k and one 10k race this year.

Action: Look up and pick dates on Runnersworld.co.uk, draw up training plan, buy new trainers.

Other/voluntary

Stay involved with PFA at kids’ school, cathedral choir, MU, CHALK, and attend German playgroup.

That should do.

James Weinheimer: Conversation between a patron and the library catalog

Vegan hoc & red wine cake

Make a sponge from the following ingredients:

250g dairy-free margarine
200g sugar
1 tsp vanilla sugar or 1/2 tsp vanilla extract/flavouring
egg substitute equivalent of 4 eggs
250g self-raising flour
25g cocoa powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
100ml red wine
100g plain chocolate drops

Pour into nicely shaped baking tin and bake for approx. 50 mins at 175° C.

Don’t tell anyone!

Right. I’m not entirely sure I really want to become a blogger but this is a professional exercise for taking part in CPD23. And why?

I’ve never been an early adopter but was always interested in new technology and never really afraid of it. And although I feel like I’ve caught up with a few Web 2.0 things (mainly Twitter) there’s so much more and without some direct need or programme I suspect I just never get round to trying them out.

Also, a few fellow cataloguers (who I’ve ‘met’ via Twitter) and I once vented the idea of putting together a 23 Things programme for cataloguers, so it seems useful to follow such a programme myself first.

Thirdly, I maybe at a career crossroads: I’ve chartered recently and am now leaving my job because we’re relocating to another city. So, torn between an MCLIP confidence boost and job seeking anxiety, continuing my CPD is probably the best I can do.

I’m looking forward to ‘meeting’ others.
